  • Walked Pae O Te Rangi Farm Summit, looping back via the Disc Golf Course. Fairly short walk of approximately 2 hours return. Track is not marked on any of the Topomaps I can see, however, was present on the Kauri Die Back map as being an open track. Open Tracks PDF Auckland Council.

  • Huntly Bypass was apparently opened on early March 2020. Only discovered it last night 17May2020 when coming home where I found that the Expressway continued on after Taupiri. The Weekend just past has been the first weekend on Covid-19 alert level 2 (Previously, interregional travel was not permitted)
  • Wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Melbourne based Thrifty Car Rental Franchise, Lawrence Vic Pty Ltd, is possibly at it again posting Fake reviews. Link to suspected fake reviews. Total of 4 reviews, 3 of them are for Thrifty locations operated by the same franchisee.

  • (14May2020 2:00 p.m. NZST) Bull trap warning still in force (at the moment). Have Liquidated some more positions last week purely as a risk reduction measure with the acknowledgement that I will quite possibly miss out on capital appreciation. Still feeling the pulse and making sense of it all. Not yet convinced the underlying economic issues have been sufficiently stabilized to consider substantive new investments for the long term. Though as always, anything can change on a dime.
  • There are the occasional times I do desire to do things alone in my own space, at my own pace and in my own time.
  • Discovered that the Brave browser for iOS on my iPad was detecting 4 “Fingerprinting methods” for this website. Went to download the Brave browser for PC Desktop to investigate further and see what scripts were causing the warning.  The PC desktop version came up with nothing – ‘0’ Fingerprinting methods (very helpful /s). Further scurrying around, found my barebones Test WordPress installation also came up with the same result. Laid down a fresh WordPress installation and it came up with the same result again. Will have to investigate later. Seems the iOS version of Brave is picking up some “responsive layout” theme scripting as having these Fingerprinting methods.

  • I am concerned that our immune systems aren’t been given a work out any more and may consequently be weakened by the time we come out of lock down.
  • As a paying customer of Spotify, it appears this doesn’t stop them from handing quite a bit of my personal data off to Facebook. Have to admit. I get a tad annoyed when I pay for things yet still have personal information data-minded the sh*t out of and then given away to a privacy invading Advertising and Analytics company like Facebook.
  • (Fri 8th May, 10:14 pm NZST) Uneasy that I’ve independently arrived at a forecast that aligns with many financial commentators. Traditionally in the past, it often indicates my crystal ball is wrong. Thats being the case, we may very well see the S&P500 Sky rocket tomorrow morning contrary to common wisdom at the release of a horrible employment situation / jobs report tomorrow, in which case it will be confirmation that the financial markets have completely decoupled from fundamentals, distorted by excess liquidity and quantitive easing.

  • bull trap warning still in force (for now). Discussed in another post. Currently Looking cautiously at the US unemployment figures due out on the 8th May (U.S. time). As with all view expressed in this blog, views and sentiments may change on a dime.
  • I’m running out of space on my Main VPS (hosting NUI.NZ). The consolidation of KAHA into NUI.NZ is going to have to be deferred.
  • Franchising as a business model I feel is increasingly on the rocks in Australia, and this was before CoVid-19 ever hit.

  • Looks like we are indeed going to need to be a lot more cognizant of all respiratory diseases and not just Coronaviruses going forward I feel. If CoVid-19 is causing this much concern, then Influenza while not the focus at the moment I assert is also a bit of a worry. Even though we have Vaccines for seasonal Influenza, my current feeling is that they have been pretty woefully ineffective in recent times, particularly in the elderly. Some sort of social distancing and social counter measures every flu season is likely to remain for the foreseeable future.
  • Bull trap warning still in place. Still trying to feel the pulse, but signals are all over the place at the moment. Can go either way. At this very point in time, it smells very much like a classic bull trap, but again, given the erratic nature of everything at the moment, anything could happen. May take the opportunity to reduce equity exposure further, then do a pre-emptive buy back later on the track (in the guise of catching a falling knife mind you).

  • My intuition is signalling a potential medium term bull trap warning in the financial markets globally. Again though, “who the flip knows?” would be pertinent statement in this situation. I’d say the secular sideways market actually started back in 2018. The correction was a long time coming and even then, surprised it hasn’t tanked further than it has before doing it’s first reversal
  • The streets over the Easter Break were full of people along with family groups walking and riding around the neighbourhood enjoying the sunny weather.
  • The :matrix.org channel had E2E Encryption enabled by one of the Mods (an action that can’t be reversed at present). At the moment, not too sure I favour doing this for a channel that is intended to be publicly accessible and viewable by the public anyway. Currently, considering where to drive this… Will let current room members ultimately gauge how they feel about it. Picking I will retain the current now encrypted channel for more discrete and casual banter and then create a new unencrypted channel for Public NZ discussions and easier community on boarding. Technically, should be fairly easy to swap over if needed.
  • It’s not just COVID-19 we all have to be mindful of I feel. It feels as if we are also losing the war against influenza with the Flu shot seemingly showing a trend of gradual loss of efficacy over the years. There’s been a few anecdotes last year of Influenza outbreaks (Causing several deaths) in several rest homes across the United States despite vaccinating all their residents along with Nurses at those facilities exclaiming how useless the vaccine was. In that vein, yes I’d expect that the physical distancing (“Social distancing”) measures implemented will become mainstream for years to come after COVID-19 subsides, particularly in the flu seasons.
  • Anecdotally, would seem the Earth has started to heal, but it’s early days yet.
  • It is also probably a time for making us more mindful of what actually matters most to us.
  • With all these layers of software infrastructure and application development. What really is the point? Would this ultimately extend human life and make it more meaningful? We appear to be getting to that crest where we are using tools for the sake of it. Have we lost sight of the more root objective?
To add: This popped up on HackerNews… Ask HN.

  • That said, have recently dropped Hacker-News from my personal links and from my daily visitation. I feel there has been a bit of probable Astroturfing and too many short “Wow! This is so cool!” type posts that add little to the discussion. There are indeed still some good posts and comments to read, but the time spent sifting out the good from the pointless became just a bit too much for me personally (Seems to be something that befalls all Internet forums admittedly)

  • It is worth highlighting that “Coronaviruses” are a type (or class if you will) of Virus. These include Common human coronaviruses which may only produce a mild, cold like, symptoms. I do wonder how reliable the test kits have been… How many false positives and false negatives there have been and has there been any such follow-up testing or otherwise investigation to ensure we aren’t picking up ordinary common coronaviruses as CoViD-19 and vice versa.
  • One positive thing about the lock down is that upon walking once were busy streets, you’re no longer suffocating in petrol and diesel fumes any more. This was especially so with busier roads such as Remuera Road, Lunn Avenue and St Johns Road for example.
  • Discovered some new tracks around the neighbourhood that I haven’t even realized that were there. Will probably go back and explore that track network later on.
  • Trialling YouTube red for a while. Probably the best time to do it.

  • This period, would certainly be a time to learn new stuff. Trying to learn more about general Linux server administration and getting more into the guts of this. More for my own edification mainly for personal projects. In a small way, it may increase, slightly, the opportunities available.
  • The Remuera Golf Course has been closed for golf and has been kindly opened up for public access walking and jogging during the lock-down period. It’s a good large area to walk around and explore and recommend at least 2 hours if you want to stroll the entire area. Though try to stay off any greens that are under maintenance.  Restricted to those local to the area obviously.
  • Snitching on your fellow citizens… RNZ Audio Bite. While could be argued that the new Police form to report CoViD-19 L4 breaches is an essential tool to aid compliance, I am concerned that it may also inevitably breed fear, contempt and distrust of fellow citizenry in one’s community. I am also concerned that some may be treating this like game in that some people may derive a twisted sense of gratification reporting others… Like idiots who repeatedly upload snore-fest videos cataloguing a series of (minor) driving mistakes to YouTube from their Dashcam and acting all virtuous and sanctimonious about it.

  • Wouldn’t be surprised to learn that CoViD-19 had spread around the world earlier than what most believe and so far has commonly been reported.
  • Microsoft Cloud skills challenge contest that was held at work upon further inquisition turned to be an almost total farce. Someone gamed the game (outside of what was clearly the intended spirit of the game) and people cried foul. The organizers eventually cracked and the rules of engagement were changed well after the Challenge had commenced and were not even properly communicated. This is perhaps the first time in 17 years of working in the company that I’ve ever sent off an Email internally that could be described in anyway as “heated” (expressing disappointment but composed in the most civil, considerate and respectful way as I could).

  • Phone Cameras are improving quite substantially. I am often asked by others what Camera I have used to take the photos I have posted to NUI.NZ and express surprised that the majority of them have been taken on a phone.
  • One area that phone cameras have not caught up yet is with Telephoto. A lot of hybrid zoom technology still produces very rough images. Recommended you still carry a dedicated travel zoom for these situations.
  • 1/2.3 inch sensors in dedicated cameras are like the 1366×768 screen resolutions in laptops. Plentiful in the market but for me are a bit of a turn off.
  • A (possible) start of a sideways secular market was detected around the middle of 2019 and was judged to have started around the beginning of 2018
  • The markets are now approximately 20-25% off of their peak. Probably expect further falls in the coming week (Written 10th March 2020 NZDT)
  • An issue of trying to mix cyclists and cars on Auckland’s road network is that the presence of cyclists tend to disrupt traffic flow due to the roads not being made to accommodate cycling activities. On a more extreme case. Cyclists tend to use the pedestrian/cyclist crossing on Highbrook Drive. While they are absolutely within their right to do so, it does cause vehicles to have to brake (brake wear and tear) and additional fuel use (due to needing to accelerate back up to speed)

  • Looking ahead for 2020. My travels both internally and internationally will probably be substantially less, probably more so as a result of the reaction to the COVID-19 outbreak. Less photo albums will be posted than usual this year.
  • The above being said, Still in the calendar…
    • A trip to Arrowtown Autumn Festival + More South Island Hiking (April),
Update 2020-03-22: CANCELLED by the airline.
    • A possible trip to Tasmania (May),
      Update 2020-03-22: CANCELLED
    • A trip to Kamchatka in Russia (July)… If Kamchatka doesn’t pan out, will change plans and just tour around Japan.
      Update 2020-03-22: In jeopardy
  • Locally (in Auckland), still planning to attend this coming weekend…
    • Pasifika
    • Kumeu Show
  • Yes, I’ve taken a bit of a bath on some of my other holdings (as anticipated in an earlier post penned before all this happened) however I am not too worried given such financial calamities have happened many times before and the market to date has managed to bounce back. Should the pull back continue, particularly if the stock market halves in value, it will be an opportunity to bolster my long term portfolio with good strong companies that have good ‘moats’ for bargain-basement prices.
  • Kind of really struggling to connect the dots regarding the hoarding of Toilet Paper. Doesn’t matter, Just slowly accumulating Cans of food by popping an extra handful in my cart every grocery shop.
  • The NZ Herald as a medium / Division of NZME / brand, needs to be taken out back and put out of it’s misery. I feel they have been blatantly irresponsible in some of their editing recently. Why are people panic buying Toilet paper when there are plenty of copies of the NZ herald to go around?
